Camping OVERVIEW
- Camping is an activity that is on the rise! According to KOA (one of the most respected companies in the industry), camping is enjoyed by more than 7 million households, which demonstrates a growth of over 6 million households since 2014. you can read the 2018 version of this report HERE. What follows on the next page will highlight some of the excting trends in camping, taken from that influential report.
- Camping is enjoying this rise in popularity thanks in large part to the millennials generation. This generation has a positive view of camping than generations before, with many (51%) expressing a desire to increase camping experiences.
- African-Americans are the fastest growing segment of RV campers.
- One-Quarter of all campers say it is important to share their experiences on social media.
- There is a 64% increase in campers that say they will camp more than three tmes per calendar year.
- Surprisingly in this digital world, there is a sharp increase in the amount of people that are interested in the emotional and physical benefits gained by time spent outdoors.
- These are some important observations, as the age and mindset of the campers is getting younger and more enthusiastic about camping. These insights can help you decide how to market to this demographic.
Market research – Camping
(Our coverage of a particular niche market will provide you with a solid foundation of how large (or small) a niche idea is, who is the typical person engaged within a certain niche, how much money is spent on products related to the niche, and data on the current and future growth of that niche.)
- The enthusiasm felt by the millennials generation is growing into Generation Z, with even more current teenagers expressing enthusiasm (81% in this report place high importance on spending time outdoors) and the need to incorporate camping into their adult lives (90%).
- The RV industry creates $50 billion in economic impacts within the U.S. annually. More than 23,000 businesses are currently involved with the industry, providing almost 45,000 direct employment opportunities and nearly $3 billion in direct wages. (Recreational Vehicle Industry Association [RVIA])
- The entire economic impact of the outdoors category is estimated by the US government at $337 billion of the entire GDP of the US!
- Camping equipment alone accounts for $4-7 billion dollars of in-store and online sales.

Conclusion
Camping is an enormous niche area, with a lot of room for an individual interpretation. The site content should reflect the popularity with the younger generations, but don’t forget older campers and families.
There are many options, both small and large ticket, for products that pertain to camping, with additional product options for items that are “related” to camping, or outdoors activities in general. For example, backpacks and kayaks go well within a camping site.
Top keywords
The following list is compiled by my favorite keyword tool, Jaaxy. This list is characterized by Jaaxy’s preferred measurements, which are:
-
SEO power is a metric that determines the difficulty or ease to rank for these keywords, with 90-100 being the easiest, 80-90 being moderate, and 70-80 for broader appeal-with more competition.
If you are unfamiliar with Jaaxy, I invite you to watch this training from my favorite, Jay at Wealthy Affiliates. He explains the metrics and powerful features of this simple to use tool He even shows proof how quick it can work!
Please also keep in mind that we have enclosed a raw keyword data package along with this guide. Jaaxy filters their results with affiliate marketers specifically in mind, but the other data will help round out your research.

Google suggestion keywords
This is a listing of the top keywords according to Google suggestion (or auto-fill) results. We use the outstanding tool Keyword.io to compile these results. These results are especially vital because they outline what Google suggests as you type. The reason they do this is to make typing a whole phrase less time-consuming. What they suggest is a “peek” into the habits of others, as it recommends the keyword phrases that are most searched for.
Keep in mind that this data is more raw than the results with Jaaxy, but it provides great insight and potential starting points for further keyword research.

YouTube keywords
This list is from YouTube, which has positioned itself as a search engine of sorts in this age of video content. It provides insight into the different-but sometimes similar- habits of users compared to a traditional Google search.
YouTube results not only uncover the content and media that your potential audience is searching for, it can give you some keyword ideas if you are planning to add a YouTube channel to your offerings. Depending on the niche idea, this can be a wonderful way to engage with your audience, and increase your marketing reach.
Remember that with a YouTube channel, you can gain subscribers and eventually monetize that traffic. It also allows you to extend the influence of your sites as a brand, and build trust.

Below, we highlight some of the best ideas for this niche. Use these as guidelines for your product promotions, but by all means use your own inspiration!
-
Google best sellers for this niche – not always affiliate programs connected to this list, but a vital way to see what people are searching for and buying
- Camping World– the largest and most popular camping shopping site! Offers 6% commission.
- BackCountry– very popular site that offers 4%-12% commission based on volume.

Things to consider
- This is information on a broader camping niche area. You may find it easier to scale it down a bit to a smaller niche area, such as tents or campground reviews. Whatever the case may be, there should be a lot of products to promote.
- Since there are an increasing amount of people just starting out in the camping activity, content tailored to the beginning camper would be very popular here. In addition, most new campers are searching for products, so reviews and in-depth content built around choosing the right products to fit their needs should convert well.
- Campers are an active bunch eager to share their experiences. A forum would work great here, as well as user-submitted content of all types. Encourage participation from your audience every step of the way, and increase your engagement with other campers from around the world!
- Camping and the great outdoors is a lifestyle for many people, not just an occasional activity. Dive deep with your content to truly connect with this crowd.
- Trends show that camping is only going to continue to grow for the foreseeable future, so now is the time to step in a establish yourself as an authority in this niche. Start smaller, then grow and include many more categories as you move forward.
Competition/ “Stars” of the niche
Part of niche research is finding and understanding your competition. You can glean ideas from them, as well as finding potential partners. There are many places to find the key influencers in each niche, such as Google, Facebook, YouTube, and many others. While this is not intended to be a complete list, it should give you a good starting point. Take a peek at how they do things- what products they promote, what types of content do they write, how do they engage with their audience. Use these ideas as inspiration, and put your own special twist into it!
